The Cherries are Here

Every year, I am thrilled when I see the cherries arrive in the store...No, I don't think they qualify for my locavore obsession, but I can't help myself. I buy them two pounds at a time and we all enjoy them. They sit, washed and waiting, on the counter top and everyone gets to help themselves as much as they want. I keep thinking I'm going to MAKE something with them, and then? Then they are gone.

I have a house of cherry addicts. Every November/December, when they're in season in our state, we will go through about 20 - 30kg of them. Mostly they're eaten, but they'll also go into the freezer for future desserts, and if they're cheap enough, there will also be cherry jam on the menu...

I love cherries, and berries. I always look forward to summer in more temperate climates where I can indulge, and, like you, I find them simply too good to eat fresh from the punnet to 'make' something out of them. They are best as nature intended them - fresh from the tree/ bush/ ground.

Cherries are a big event for me too! And I have a fond memory associated with them too. Mr. MarthaAndMe and I got married on June 9 lo 21 years ago. On our honeymoon, we eventually became starved for fruit, since when you're eating in restaurants all the time you don't get a lot of it. We stopped at a grocery store and bought a big bag of cherries and ate them in the car, spitting the pits out the windows. Romantic, huh?

How funny - we love cherries too and I always think about what I"ll make with them (clafoutis, breads, cakes) and then the kids eat them straight and they are gone and that's it! But perhaps that's the best way to savor them.

I just found out we'll have local cherries on Friday! Taking the boys to go pick them; then we'll make jam and freeze sugared cherries and pie filling.
